## **Why an outside look matters**

A side door gets propped open every afternoon so the delivery driver doesn’t have to buzz in. A visitor sign-in sheet sits on a counter nobody watches after 10 a.m. The AED is in a locked closet, and only the facilities manager has the key. None of these feel like problems until the day they are.

Most workplaces aren’t careless. They’re busy. The people who walk the same halls every day stop seeing the gaps, because the gaps have become part of the routine. A security assessment is a structured outside look at your facility, your procedures, and the way people actually move through the day. It ends with a short list of what to fix, in the order that matters most.

Here is what that process covers, and what you should expect to have in hand when it’s done.

## **What the assessment covers**

An assessment starts with a conversation, not a clipboard. Before the walk-through, we talk with the people who run the place: an office manager, a plant supervisor, a pastor or safety team lead. We want to know what has already happened, what worries them, and what a normal day looks like. Then we go see it.

### **1. The perimeter and the way in**

We start where an outsider would. How visible is the building from the parking lot? Which doors are locked, which are supposed to be, and which ones people prop open anyway? Is there one clear entrance for visitors, or can someone walk in through a loading dock or a side hallway without being noticed? Lighting, sight lines, landscaping, and signage all get a look.

### **2. How visitors are handled**

A front desk is only a control point if someone is watching it. We look at how guests, vendors, and contractors are greeted, signed in, and escorted, and what happens when the receptionist steps away. In a house of worship, the same question applies to greeters and ushers: who notices the person who doesn’t fit, and what do they do next?

### **3. Daily routines and people**

The biggest gaps usually live in habits, not hardware. We look at opening and closing procedures, who works alone and when, how cash or valuables are handled, and how employees leave at night. For teams in the field, we review how appointments are scheduled and whether anyone knows where a colleague is going.

### **4. Communication and alerts**

If something goes wrong, how does the word get out? We check whether employees know how to call for help, whether there’s a way to warn the whole building quickly, and whether anyone has practiced it. A plan that lives in a binder and has never been rehearsed won’t hold up under stress.

### **5. Emergency response and medical readiness**

Security and medical emergencies overlap more than most people expect. We note where exits, AEDs, and first aid kits are, whether they’re reachable, and how many people on site are trained to use them. A cardiac arrest in the break room is far more likely than an intruder, and the first few minutes matter in both.

### **6. Policies on paper**

Finally, we compare what the written policies say with what we actually saw. That includes visitor policies, workplace violence and reporting procedures, and, where it applies, how the organization handles firearms on the premises under Massachusetts law. Gaps between the policy and the practice are often the easiest to close.

## **What you get at the end**

An assessment is only useful if it leads to action. You should walk away with four things.

- **A plain-language findings summary.** What we saw, area by area, without jargon or scare tactics.
- **A prioritized fix list.** Every gap ranked by risk and effort, so you know what to do this week, this quarter, and later. Many of the top items cost little or nothing: a changed habit, a moved key, a door that stays shut.
- **Training recommendations.** Where your people need skills, not hardware: situational awareness and de-escalation, CPR and AED certification, or firearms safety instruction where it applies.
- **A debrief with your leadership.** We walk through the findings together and answer questions, so the plan has an owner before we leave.

## **Where to start**

You don’t need a large security budget to benefit from an assessment. Offices, plants, warehouses, congregations, and small professional practices all have gaps that can be closed with better routines and a little training.

LeClair Protective Group’s assessments are led by Rick LeClair, a Massachusetts State Police certified firearms instructor and American Heart Association CPR instructor, and a longtime martial arts and self-defense teacher. Sessions are scheduled around your operations, so the walk-through doesn’t disrupt your day.
